What you need to know about analysis
An acetone urine test is a test that measures the levels of ketone bodies, such as acetoacetic acid, beta-hydroxybutyric acid, and acetone. These substances are metabolic products produced in the liver and excreted by the kidneys. Normally, ketone bodies are not found in the urine, but when their levels are elevated, acetonemia develops, a condition in which ketone bodies accumulate and can lead to acetonemic syndrome.
Acetone in the urine of children is a fairly common phenomenon. It can be caused by both temporary metabolic disorders and severe chronic diseases. Various factors can trigger an acetone crisis: stress, overwork, emotional overstrain, long travel, eating disorders, or acute respiratory diseases.
The primary form of acetonemic syndrome is usually related to the child's diet - excessive consumption of sweets, fatty foods, or foods with preservatives and dyes can be the cause. The secondary form appears as a result of yet undiagnosed diseases, such as liver pathologies, diabetes mellitus, brain tumors, or thyrotoxicosis.
Symptoms of acetonemia in a child may include severe vomiting, as well as a characteristic odor of acetone in the breath or urine. The main cause of this condition is a violation of fat metabolism and carbohydrate digestion. In such cases, a doctor — a general practitioner, endocrinologist, pediatrician , gastroenterologist or nephrologist — may prescribe a urine test for acetone to clarify the diagnosis and assess metabolic disorders.
Як підготуватися до аналізу?
Особливої підготовки до аналізу ацетон немає. Він проводиться за допомогою тест-смужок. Бажано перед забором сечі дитині провести ретельний туалет полових органів.
Для визначення кількості кетонових тіл необхідно використовувати свіжу сечу. Процес визначення виглядає так:
- Смужку занурюють у рідину.
- Тримають 60 секунд.
- Очікують 2-3 хвилини, поки пройде реакція, та оцінюють результат.
Забарвлення на смужці порівнюють із колірною шкалою наявності концентрації кетонових тіл у сечі:
- +/- (0,5 ммоль/л) або + (1,5 ммоль/л) - ацетонемія легкого ступеня, можливе лікування в домашніх умовах;
- ++ (4 ммоль/л) - ацетонемія середньої тяжкості. Якщо батьки можуть самостійно провести регідратацію, то можливе лікування вдома; якщо ні - у стаціонарі;
- +++ (10 ммоль/л) - важкий ступінь ацетонемії, у більшості випадків потрібна госпіталізація.
How to prepare for the analysis?
There is no special preparation for the acetone analysis. It is performed using test strips. It is advisable to thoroughly clean the child's genitals before collecting urine.
To determine the amount of ketone bodies, you must use fresh urine. The determination process looks like this:
- The strip is immersed in the liquid.
- Hold for 60 seconds.
- Wait 2-3 minutes for the reaction to take place and evaluate the result.
The color on the strip is compared with the color scale for the presence of ketone body concentrations in the urine:
- +/- (0.5 mmol/l) or + (1.5 mmol/l) - mild acetonemia, treatment at home is possible;
- ++ (4 mmol/l) - moderate acetonemia. If parents can rehydrate themselves, treatment at home is possible; if not - in a hospital;
- +++ (10 mmol/l) - severe degree of acetonemia, in most cases hospitalization is required.
