A hemoglobin blood test is a blood test to determine the level of hemoglobin in the blood.
Hemoglobin is the most important element of blood, an iron-containing protein and the main component of red blood cells. It is hemoglobin that gives blood its red color. It has the ability to capture oxygen and transport it to organs. Without hemoglobin, normal saturation of tissues with oxygen would be impossible, which affects many metabolic processes in the body. With a lack of hemoglobin in the blood, anemia develops.
What are the indications for the analysis?
- diagnostics of diseases and treatment results, control of metabolic processes in the body;
- before using a number of drugs;
- the entire period of pregnancy;
- diabetes mellitus (glycosylated hemoglobin test).
How to prepare for the analysis?
It is recommended to perform a hemoglobin test in the morning, preferably on an empty stomach (it is not recommended to eat 6-8 hours before the test). As an exception, the child can be given water to drink. Before the test, you should get a good night's sleep, and physical exertion is prohibited.
For glycosylated hemoglobin, blood is taken from a vein, for hemoglobin testing, blood can be taken from a finger. If a child has a fear of blood, dizziness occurs, it is necessary to notify the medical staff ( pediatrician ).
It is contraindicated to conduct the analysis during a stressful situation or severe fatigue. Against the background of an inflammatory process in the body, the result of the hemoglobin test may be temporarily distorted.
